Sometimes bright, bold colors are just too much and a subtle softness will suffice. Don't you think?

...the one that brings these nasty things forth! Growing up, my mom called these ugly bugs locusts, but they're really cicadas. I don't care what they're called; I don't love them! When I was small, my mom would catch these screeching things and squeeze them to make them screeeeeeeech even more and she would chase me with them. So not fun. At least not for me. She was having a blast, however. Hehe!

For the Sake of Silly

Sometimes I shoot stuff just for the haha of it. Okay, not just sometimes. I guess I do that pretty often. So today, before I send my favorite studio light for repairs (I can't change stops on it, hence the huge, uninteresting depth-of-field in these pics), I decided to use it for one last haha. I'll miss you light...please hurry home!
And yes, I read Breaking Dawn eons ago, but pulled it out for a prop. What I'm really reading now is Her Fearful Symmetry and it's REALY GOOD!

I grew up in Woodbridge, VA in a neighborhood called Marumsco Woods, a.k.a "the State Streets" because every street was named for a state (or Commonwealth, as it were). Most of my besties lived in the State Streets, too. One of them was Wen McNally. During my June trip to Virginia, I had the divine pleasure of hanging out with Wen and playing in her studio and in the woods behind her studio. Here are a few pics I made behind Wen's studio, in the woods. Wen had her hubster haul her studio lights out into the trees. Way too much fun!

...although, this barn wasn't there then. I love barns. New ones, old ones, you name it. I don't know the names of the various styles of barns, but when (note, I'm saying "when" and not "if") we move back to VA, I want a barn! And if there are super fun kiddos like these living on my road, even better.

VA Session V, Part I - On Grace Spring Farm

I can't tell you how hard it is to be back in brown dirt. Arizona, there are many things I love about you, but the dry, brown desert is not one of them. I miss the beautiful farms of Virginia, the rolling hills, the smell of hay. Old farm houses with wrap-around porches and rocking chairs, shaded by old oak trees. I'll show the latter tomorrow...here are some up closes of some lovely people who live in Northern VA, but come home to the country on weekends.

I had a few VA customers choose a session that included the full MMP experience and those peeps will have more photos to show, in different styles. Hence, here's Part Deux of the cute kiddos (and sassy mama DK) on the "farm up the road." { See last post for Part I }

There's a rustic old farm up the road from my momma's house near Byrd Mill, Virginia. I thought it would be the most perfect place to shoot a session. The owners of the farm were kind enough to allow me to shoot there; it was truly a photographer's paradise! { ...and the family went with the big session which includes the full Miller&Miller editing extravaganza...takes longer to edit, but oh! what fun! }

Virginia Portraits - The Tick Shed
by

My third session in Virginia was with some of my favorite people. Poor Ean, though. I made him stand in the doorway of an old shed. It will henceforth and forever be known as the Tick Shed. Ean noticed a tick crawling up his leg after a few shots, so I told him to just get out of there. He walked toward his mom and they picked 14 ticks off him! FOURTEEN! I had some serious creepy crawlies after that. Angie told me later that they had found 3 more and those were stuck. Eww eww eww eww eww eww! Sorry, Ean!
Evy, you are a rockin' dude, by the way! I love the things you say. You have got STYLE, my man!
My dear friend, Angie, who looks like Melanie Griffith:
Do you love how I spelled photography right there ^ ?

Back from Work and Play in the Great Commonwealth of Virginia!

...and what a long, strange trip it was! There are some funny stories coming up. In the meantime, here's a tiny sampling of my first session in VA. The heat and humidity were over the top, record-setting! THIRTEEN degrees above normal for June. Fortunately, this sweet and funny family handled it well. I on the other hand, was soaking wet and could barely see through the salty sweat and make-up running off my face. TMI?
